How peri menopause can impact a woman's skin
Peri menopause is the transition period before menopause, when a woman's hormones fluctuate drastically. This can significantly impact her skin due to hormonal changes, particularly the decline in estrogen levels.
Here are some common skin changes during perimenopause:
1. Dryness and Dehydration
Estrogen helps maintain skin hydration by increasing the production of natural oils and retaining moisture. With decreasing estrogen levels, the skin tends to become drier and more prone to dehydration.
2. Loss of Elasticity and Thinning
Collagen production, which gives the skin its firmness and elasticity, slows down as estrogen levels drop. This can lead to thinner skin, loss of firmness, and the development of fine lines and wrinkles.
3. Increased Sensitivity
The skin barrier can become more vulnerable during perimenopause, leading to increased sensitivity, redness, and irritation. You might find that your skin reacts more to products that were previously well-tolerated.
4. Acne and Breakouts
Fluctuating hormone levels can cause an increase in sebum production, leading to clogged pores and acne, especially around the chin and jawline.
5. Hyperpigmentation and Age Spots
Sun exposure and hormonal changes can contribute to the development of hyperpigmentation, including age spots and melasma, as the skin's ability to repair itself slows down.
6. Sagging and Jowls
Loss of collagen and elastin, combined with fat redistribution, can result in sagging skin, particularly around the jawline and neck.
Skincare Tips for Perimenopausal Skin
Hydrate: Use hydrating products like hyaluronic acid and glycerin to keep the skin moisturized.
Gentle Cleansing: Opt for gentle, non-foaming cleansers that don't strip the skin of its natural oils.
Sun Protection: Daily sunscreen use is crucial to prevent further damage and hyperpigmentation.
Antioxidants: Incorporate vitamin C, E, and other antioxidants to help combat free radical damage.
Retinoids: These can help improve collagen production but should be used cautiously to avoid irritation.
Peptides and Growth Factors: These ingredients can help boost collagen and improve skin elasticity.
Cosmetic acupuncture: Needles stimulating the superficial layers of the skin, can help bring blood to the surface and create new collagen to help with skin's plumpness and fine lines. Treatment also includes gua sha massage, and a whole body treatment to work on the inside as well.
